Hey, Kev here and this is my semi-monthly digest of how you can simply, communicate better. Whether it’s managing up, managing direct reports, trying to communicate your emotions to your partner– there’s always a way we can Say It Better!
When I first started this blog, I didn’t know for sure what it’d become. At the time, I was dating and that person’s wealth of knowledge and support helped me lean into investing in this space. So, we’re back with the three C’s of this blog: Consistency, Captivity & Counsel
Lead the Year, Don’t Defend It
Every January, newly elected and appointed officials step into office with energy, ambition, and a mandate to lead. The first 100 days are critical: this is when trust is built, direction is set, and a leader’s credibility is established.
But too often, instead of defining the narrative, leaders get stuck in reactive mode. A misinterpreted quote, a policy announcement rolled out without context, or even an offhand remark at a press conference can dominate headlines for weeks. Suddenly, a leader who promised transformation looks like just another politician dodging questions.
The cost of this is bigger than bad press — it’s lost trust. Once lost, it’s hard to regain.
Despite his fresh mandate, Hall’s early days were marked by reactive communication. Facing criticism over economic development plans and youth initiatives, his administration struggled to articulate a cohesive vision. The result? Public confusion, skepticism, and a reputation that seemed defensive rather than decisive.
Another example comes from Mayor Yemi's first 100 days in Colorado Springs. Despite publishing a thematic blueprint outlining top priorities, the administration faced challenges in aligning messaging across various platforms. Inconsistent communication led to confusion among residents about the city's direction, highlighting the importance of clear and consistent messaging in establishing trust and credibility.
These examples illustrate a key point: new leaders don’t fail because they lack ideas — they fail when their communication doesn’t match their ambition. Clarity and consistency are not optional; they are essential.
Empowering leaders to communicate with clarity, confidence, and impact—one step at a time. When something goes sideways, resist the urge to blame. Start with curiosity.
At Stepwise, we know leadership begins with language. Say It Better isn’t about spin or superficial talking points; it’s about setting your message with clarity, maintaining consistency, and leading proactively.
Stepwise equips newly elected and appointed officials to:
→ Develop a Clear Message Early: Establish a narrative that aligns with your vision and resonates with constituents.
→ Maintain Consistency Across Platforms: Ensure speeches, press statements, and social media all reinforce your core message.
→ Lead Proactively: Anticipate potential challenges and address them head-on with confidence.
By doing this, leaders avoid the trap of playing defense and instead define the narrative on their own terms.

AI is basically the new intern. Seriously, it’s not some scary robot coming for your job. Think of it as a tool that helps with the boring stuff—like brainstorming first drafts or analyzing data—so you can focus on the creative, human parts of your work. It’s becoming the go-to for making things quicker and smarter.
Social media is the new Google. When you want a real review or a quick how-to, where do you go? My guess is TikTok or Instagram. More and more, people are using social platforms to find answers from actual humans, not just company websites. The vibe is less "corporate ad" and more "helpful advice from a friend."
Your whole team is your talent pool. The line between full-time staff and freelancers is getting super blurry. Smart leaders are starting to see everyone—employees, contractors, part-timers—as one big team. It’s all about bringing the right people together for the right project, no matter how they’re hired.
Data is your friend, not just a bunch of numbers. Instead of just collecting data, we’re finally using it to make better decisions. Think of it like this: data can help you predict what your team will need next or spot where a project is going off the rails before it happens. It’s about being proactive, not just reactive.
Short-form video still rules. Let’s be real, we all have the attention span of a goldfish these days. Quick, snappy videos on TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are still the best way to grab attention and get a point across fast. If you're not making them, you're probably missing out on connecting with your audience where they are.
